A. R. Rahman Education
The Christian university in Madras was where he studied. He was awarded a full tuition scholarship to study at Oxford University’s Trinity College of Music. His original name was A. S. Dileep Kumar, but he later converted to Islam and changed his name to A. R. Rahman. His family had a tough time because his father passed away suddenly. He had to start earning money to help out his family when he was just nine years old. A large, blended family was his daily reality.
He has always been interested in cutting-edge technology, especially when it comes to musical instruments. He got his start as a professional musician by performing on his father’s keyboard alongside stars like Illaya Raja and Raj Koti. He had a perfect score on the board examinations and planned to get into computer engineering. Despite this, he began to take his father’s advice and study music with Master Dhanraj after experiencing some of life’s difficulties. His first paycheck was fifty Indian Rupees (INR) per month, which he earned by operating a record player.
A. R. Rahman Early Life
An accomplished musician himself, R. K. Shekhar is the father of A. R. Rahman. Kareema Beegum, formerly known as Kasturi Shekhar, is his mother. Rahman started playing the piano when he was four years old; his father, R.K. Sekhar, was a famous Tamil musician who composed themes for the Malayalam cinema industry. As a result of his father’s fortuitous acquisition of a synthesiser, the young man was able to continue his interest in electronics and computers while also developing an appreciation for music. When Rahman was 9, his father Sekhar passed away, and by the time he was 11, Rahman was playing the piano professionally to help support his family. The practical experience he gained after dropping out of school helped him earn a scholarship to Trinity College, Oxford, where he majored in Western classical music.
A. R. Rahman Career
When A. R. Rahman first started out, he was a member of a band called Roots (1984-88). In addition to being a member of this group, he has also provided keyboard work for 10–12 Kannada films. He eventually became a member of the band Nemesis Avenue. He used to be a producer-arranger for the band and a performer for their “Jive live” event. He first began writing commercial tunes in 1987. This first opportunity came about because of Alwyn’s hip new watch collection. Over the course of 5 years, he composed music for about 300 commercials. While everything was going on, he collaborated on the album “Colours” alongside big names including Shankar, Sivamani, and Zakir Hussain.
In 1991, he met renowned director Mani Ratnam through producer Sharada Trilok. When Mani Ratnam saw Rahman’s score for the film Roja, he was so taken with it that it led to the composer’s big break (1992). He shot to fame with his appearance in the film “Roja.” With about 200 million cassettes sold and 150 million recordings of his soundtracks made, he was ranked in 2004 as one of the top-selling recording artists of all time.
He had already accomplished much in his life, but he continued his education and trained under the likes of Dakshinamurthy, N. Gopalakrishnan, Krishnan Nair, Nithyanandham, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Jacob John to perfect his musical abilities in the classical Hindustani, Carnatic, Qawwali, and Western styles. In 1997, he worked with Sony Music to release an album titled “Vande Mataram” in honour of India’s 50th anniversary of independence. It was the company’s first South Asian artist album.
