He attended a catholic elementary and middle school in Ajjarkad, Udupi, Ananda Ashrama in Dakshina Kannada, and Chitrapur Math in Uttara Kannada, all of which were located in the former Mysore State (now Karnataka). His education continued through eighth grade at New English School, Honnavar. When he was in the ninth grade, he was relocated to Mumbai so that he may continue his education. He spoke at length on his struggles to adjust to life in Mumbai from Karnataka. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in a business college in Bandra, where he remained for three years until accepting a position at Union Bank through the theatre quota. Having established himself as a professional actor in Mumbai, he moved back to Banglore in 1976, after spending almost 14 years away.

Ananth Nag Career

While Anant Nag was handing out wedding cards for his sister, someone noticed him and offered him a job in the theatre, as he explained in an interview. Prabhakar Mudur and Venkatrao Talageri, two major players in the Indian theatre scene, took note of him and cast him in their productions. His debut performance was as a Hindu monk in the drama Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, which was well received by the audience. Through the age of 22, he performed in plays written in Konkani, Kannada, and Marathi. Anant was captivated by Mumbai’s burgeoning theatre scene. A number of well-known writers, including K.K. Suvarna and Girish Karnad, worked with him. He was also cast in pivotal roles in socially conscious productions by playwrights like Amol Palekar and Satyadev Dubey.

His extensive stage work in the early 1970s led to acting roles in two films: P. V. Nanjaraja Urs’ Kannada film, ‘Sankalpa,’ and Shyam Benegal’s Hindi feature, ‘Ankur.’ In 1973, his first film, Sankalpa, was released in Kannada. It was theatre director Satyadev Dubey who put them in touch, and Shyam Benegal would later become a friend and collaborator. As he explained in an interview, he was given a substantial sum of money to star in a Tamil film, but he turned it down.

Kalyug (1974), Ankur (1975), Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976), Bhumika (1978), and Kondura (1978) all featured him as a leading actor under Shyam Benegal’s direction (1981). He distinguished himself as an actor capable of several roles, for which he received numerous awards. His outstanding abilities have been on display in films like Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu, Udbhava, Hosa Neeru, etc. His filmography includes almost 270 credits. He has had a successful career but admitted in an interview that he lacks training as an actor because he has never done a dance number or an action sequence. He continued by saying that he would rather play it straight with the script’s requirements than be over-the-top. Due to his supporting role in K.G.F. : Chapter 1, he gained a new legion of devoted fans.
