On May 29, 1954, Pankaj Kapur was born to a family of Khatri descent in the Punjabi city of Ludhiana. He received his formal schooling in Punjab and afterward pursued acting as a career. To further his education, he enrolled in the National School of Drama.

They were settled in New Delhi where they had their only child Shahid Kapoor in 1981. The couple divorced in 1984. In 1988, Pankaj Kapur wed actress Supriya Pathak. They have one daughter Sanah Kapur and a son Ruhaan Kapur

Pankaj Kapur Career

His first film was Arohan, directed by Shyam Benegal. The following year, in 1982, he portrayed Pyarelal Nayyar, Mahatma Gandhi’s second secretary, in Richard Attenborough’s film Gandhi. The Hindi dub of the film featured him subbing for Ben Kingsley.

Beginning with Shyam Benegal’s Mandi (1983) and continuing with Kundan Shah’s comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (also 1983), he appeared in a series of art films that fell under the parallel cinema category and were directed by leading art film directors. This was then followed by the comedic Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho! (1984) by Saeed Akhtar Mirza, the action film Khandhar (1984) by Mrinal Sen, and the suspense film Khamosh (1985) by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He was in several independent features that went on to win National Film Awards for Best Picture.

Karamchand, a detective comedy costarring him and Sushmita Mukherjee, was his first television appearance, airing in 1986.  Kab Tak Pukaroon (Doordarshan), Zabaan Sambhaal Ke (a version of the English TV series Mind Your Language), Lifeline with Vijaya Mehta, Neem ka Ped, and ultimately hilarious interludes in Philips Top 10 are just few of the many TV shows in which he has appeared throughout the years.

While this was going on, he starred in several art house films like Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986), Ek Ruka Hua Faisla (1986), and Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin (1986). (1987). In the commercial action picture Jalwa (1987), in which he co-starred with Naseeruddin Shah, his comedic side was once again on display.
He won his first National Film Award for the 1989 film Raakh, which also starred Aamir Khan.
