Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, directed by Ayan Mukerji in 2013, featured one of his finest acting performances. As one of Bollywood’s highest-grossing movies ever, the picture brought in over three billion rupees.
Yet, after the success of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, a slew of letdowns ensued. The 2013 action comedy Besharam was a commercial and critical flop because it fell short of expectations. After taking a year off, the actor popped up in films like Roy, Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet, and Tamasha. In spite of his nomination for Best Actor at the 2015 Filmfare Awards for his work in Tamasha, none of these movies fared well at the domestic box office.
