Vinayaka Chaviti, or Ganesh Chaturthi, is a Hindu festival honouring the return of the god Ganesha (Ganesh) to Earth from his heavenly dwelling in the heavens. Ganesha's clay murtis are placed in homes and atop elaborate pandals to celebrate the occasion (temporary stages). Vedic hymns and other Hindu scriptures are chanted during rituals including prayer and fasting (vrata) (fasting).

Modaka, a sweet said to be Ganesha's favourite, is often included in the offerings and prasada from the daily prayers that are given from the pandal to the community. On the tenth day after the festival has begun, the idol is taken in a procession through the streets accompanied by music and chanting, and finally immersed in a local body of water, such as a river or the sea.

This last ceremony is called visarjan. There are around 150,000 statues drowned every year in Mumbai alone. At this point, Ganesha is said to have returned to his heavenly home and the clay idol has dissolved.
