His first film as a director was the Fahadh Faasil-starring comedy-drama Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016). In high school, he attended Emmanuel’s in Kothanalloor. He did his prerequisites at Kuriakose Elias College in Mannanam and then transferred to St. Philomena’s College in Mysore to earn his BSc. His love of drama and film led him to pursue advanced degrees in the field, first earning an M.A. in Theatre Arts from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady and then an M.Phil. in Theatre Arts from Mahatma Gandhi University.

For his first job in the industry, Pothan worked on the set of 2010 film 9 KK Road as an assistant director. When Aashiq Abu needed an assistant, he went to him, and he ended up helping out on five of Aashiq’s films. In Aashiq Abu’s film Salt N’ Pepper from 2011, he made his acting debut in the role of a film director. In 2016, he made his directing debut with the comedy-drama Maheshinte Prathikaaram, which starred Fahadh Faasil. At the 64th Annual National Film Awards, this film was recognized as the Best Feature Film in Malayalam. At the 64th Filmfare Awards South, Pothan was also named the best director. His 2017 film Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum was his second directing effort, and it was a commercial and critical success. As an assistant, he worked on 22 Female Kottayam (2012), Da Thadiya (2012), and Gangster (2012) by filmmaker Aashiq Abu (2014). Salt N’ Pepper (2011), 22 Female Kottayam (2012), Idukki Gold (2013), Gangster (2014), Iyobinte Pusthakam (2014), and Rani Padmini (2015) are only a few of the Aashiq Abu films in which he has appeared in supporting parts (2015). In 2014, he worked with Dileesh Nair on the set of Tamaar Padaar as the film’s chief assistant director.

First appearing on screen in Chandranudikunna Dikkil (1999), directed by Lal Jose, he cut his teeth in the film industry as a junior artist. Later, in Salt N’ Pepper, he got his first serious acting job. Until the year 2020, he will have appeared in more than 50 films. The 2019 film Kumbalangi Nights, which Dileesh co-produced, was widely praised by critics.
