Kani Kusruti Early Life
Kani was born to social activist and rationalist parents, Jayasree A. K. and Maitreya Maitreyan, in the Keralan village of Cheruvakkal. In an effort to remove the social status symbol represented by a family’s surname in India, her parents had changed it.
She made up the last name “Kusruti,” which means “mischievous” in Malayalam, when she was 15 and needed one for the class 10th exam application. She was born and raised in Thiruvananthapuram, where she first encountered “a shared forum for theatrical practitioners” in the shape of the Abhinaya Theatre Research Centre. After that, she relocated to Thrissur, where she studied theatre arts at the Thrissur School of Drama from 2005-2007. She spent her last two years of college studying physical theatre at L’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq.
Kani Kusruti Career
Kani Kusruti made her acting debut in the 2003 Malayalam film Anyar, playing a bus passenger. She played Zeba in the 2009 anthology film Kerala Cafe. In 2010, she appeared in the thriller film Cocktail as Elsa, a prostitute. She played SP Jayalakshmi IPS in the 2013 romantic comedy Oru Indian Pranayakadha. It was a sleeper hit despite competition from Drishyam. She then starred as an AGS Officer in the satirical political spoof film Masala Republic the following year.
In the 2017 action film Spyder, she played the mother of the protagonists, Sudalai and Bhairavadu. In 2018, she played Sathya in the short film Maa, in which she acted in Tamil. During the year 2020, she played the role of Khadeeja in the Malayalam drama film Biriyaani. In the 2021 Hindi philosophical science fiction film Ok Computer, she played the role of Monalisa Paul. In 2022, she played Sheeja P.K., Balu’s wife in the Malayalam political social-thriller film Pada.
