Shashank Arora Early Life

Arora entered the world on 21 February 1989 in New Delhi, India. Already at a young age, he shown a keen interest in and talent for the performing arts. He left Delhi after graduating from high school in order to pursue further study in Canada, where he briefly participated in a street theatre troupe organised by human rights advocates. After graduating from college in late 2008, he travelled to Mumbai to pursue a career in acting.

His mother and father are an art director and a novelist. As a young boy, he was influenced by the films of Francis Ford Coppola and Saeed Mirza. Arora received his bachelor’s degree in cinema from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, where he also studied music as a minor. After that he moved to Mumbai in hopes of finding job, but was unsuccessful. Everything he knows, he learned from his tutor Robert Reece at the Actors Studio in Los Angeles. After that, he became a guest instructor at both Whistling Woods International and the Film and Television Institute of India. Also, he interned with Saher Latif, the renowned casting director.

Arora made his film debut as a supporting role named Ranjit in the 2012 film Myoho. His breakthrough came in the Yash Raj Films production of the same name, Titli (2014), where he played the title character. The next year, Arora’s performance in Titli earned him nominations for the best newcomer categories at the Filmfare, Stardust, and Zee Cine awards. His portrayal of Naman in the 2016 film Brahman Naman. With this, Arora became the first Indian actor to have films in both Cannes and Sundance. The next year, he portrayed Uday, a bass musician, in Rock On 2.

He played the drug dealer Bicky in the 2017 film Zoo. The film, which competed at the Busan International Film Festival that same year, was the first feature-length film to be shot entirely on an iPhone 6s in India. Subsequently, Netflix India acquired Zoo. Next, Shashank was seen playing Dhruv in the critically acclaimed and commercially successful film Lipstick Under My Burkha (2017).
