After earning his degree from the University of Madras in 1983, Shiva enrolled at a drama school in Chennai at the director K. Balachander’s encouragement. He entered the film industry with Anand after receiving Kuchipudi dance instruction from Vempetti Chinni Sathyam in Chennai during his university studies.
Shiva married Geeta, a child of S. Bangarappa, a former prime minister of Karnataka. Niveditha and Nirupama are the daughters of the couple. The Sri Krishnadevaraya Vijayanagara University awarded him an honorary doctorate.

Shiva made his acting debut in the 1986 film Anand. Prior to that, he had made a brief appearance as a young artist in the 1974 film. Kalyana Srinivasa He played a range of parts over the course of his 36-year acting career. Janumada Jodi, Jogi, Anand, Ratha Sapthami, Nammoora Mandara Hoove, Om, and Chigurida Kanasu are some of his most renowned films. He appeared in the 18-hour film Sugreeva. The seven wonders of the world were the locations for his movie Cheluveye Ninne Nodalu. His 100th film, Jogayya, is a sequel to the box office sensation Bhajarangi (2013), which ran for more than 100 days. Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu all saw the movie’s release. In the state of Karnataka alone, 212 theatres saw its release.
