His father Nagendra Babu’s film Hands Up! marked Varun Tej’s debut as a child actor when he was just 10 years old. Pooja Hegde was also a newcomer when she starred in Mukunda. However, it received a mixed reception. Kanche, a 2015 war film in which he co-starred with Pragya Jaiswal, was well received by critics. “Capability to shift gears from intense to sobriety” is how The Times of India described Varun Tej’s performance as Dhupati Haribabu in the film.
