When Yuvan was in the tenth grade, he decided to leave St. Bede’s Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai, India to pursue a career in music. He took piano lessons at Chennai’s Musee Musical while also learning under Master Jacob.

Yuvan Shankar Raja’s parents, Jeeva and Ilaiyaraaja, gave birth to him in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. His two older siblings, composer Karthik Raja and singer-composer Bhavatharini, both went on to become musicians as well. His uncles and aunts are the composer and director Gangai Amaran and R.D. Bhaskar, respectively; his cousins are the composer Venkat Prabhu and the directors Premgi Amaren and Parthi Bhaskar.
Ilaiyaraaja, a film composer, and Jeeva Rajayya, a film producer, were his parents. On October 31st, 2011, his mom passed away. His older sibling is Karthik Raja (Composer), and his older sibling is Bhavatharini. Venkat Prabhu and Premgi Amaren are his cousins.

Over the course of his career, Yuvan Shankar Raja has contributed to well over a hundred films in Tamil, earning him widespread acclaim as an adaptable composer. At the tender age of 16, he began his professional career by composing music for an album, and he later went on to work in the Tamil cinema and music industries. He’s been making music ever since, and it’s gotten him a lot of attention and support from music lovers everywhere.
With his score for Raam, he made history in 2006 by becoming the first Indian composer to win an award at the Cyprus International Film Festival. Over the course of his 25-year career, he has written music for well over a hundred films, earning him a reputation as one of the most in-demand composers in Tamil cinema. Likened to A.R. Rahman, he has earned the comparison. In addition to YSR Films, he also controls the record label U1 Records. Azhagai Irukkirai Bayamai Irukkirathu, 7G Rainbow Colony, and Paruthiveeran are just a few of his more well-known works. He has also written film scores in other South Indian languages like Tamil.
Over the course of the last 25 years, Yuvan has composed the music for hundreds of films. His career in music began in 1996 when he wrote the score for the film Aravindhan. By the middle of the 2000s, Yuvan Shankar Raja had established himself as one of Tamil cinema’s most in-demand composers, having broken through with the soundtrack to 2001’s Thulluvadho Ilamai. While working on the drama 7G Rainbow Colony in 2004, he was honored with the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director in Tamil. In 2006, he won the prize for best original score at the Cyprus International Film Festival being the only Indian composer to do so. In 2009, Yuvan’s Telugu musical Oy! won the Filmfare Special Award – South.
