Poyyoundarkudikkadu is a small town in Tamil Nadu, India, not far from the city of Thanjavur, where Ravi Varman was born. Young Varman lost his mother. His mother’s likeness was captured inadvertently by the wedding photographer at the local wedding just before she passed away. Varman took a trip to the studio to have an image enlargement done, where he first encountered the term “out of focus.” As a result, he became fascinated by photography and grew to love cinema, even if he never seriously contemplated a future in the film industry.
