Ever since he was a young man, Guru Somasundaram had a passion for the theatre. After finishing college in 2002, Guru joined the well-known Chennai theatre troupe “Koothu-P-Pattarai” to hone his acting chops and prepare for a future in the acting industry. He joined a theatre troupe and appeared in multiple productions with them. While he was performing the role of Chandrahari in a stage production of Chandrahari, he caught the attention of director Thiagarajan Kumararaja, who was so delighted with his performance that he gave him a role in one of his upcoming films.

As 2008 progressed, Thiagarajan reached out to Guru and cast him in his neo-noir flick “Aaranya Kaandam.” In this case, “Jungle Chapter” refers to a section of the epic Ramayana that served as inspiration for the movie. Guru told the press that he modified his hairdo, mustache, walking styles, body language, and mannerisms to fit the character’s characteristics, and claimed he lost seven kilograms in weight. After “Aaranya Kaandam” was released on June 10, 2011, it went on to win several awards both at home and abroad. These include the Grand Jury Award for Best Film at the 2010 South Asian International Film Festival as well as the Best Editing and Best First Film of a Director awards at the National Film Awards.

Guru Somasundaram got the breakthrough of his career with Raju Murugan’s Tamil-language political satire film “Joker.” Released on August 12, 2016, it tells the narrative of Mannar Mannan, a simple villager who declares himself president of the country and fights against the inequalities he sees in his society, most notably the lack of access to indoor plumbing in rural areas.

Guru starred as Mannar Mannan opposite Ramya Pandian and Gayathri Krishnaa and received appreciation for his performance. Two awards were given to the film at the 64th National Film Awards, both for Best Feature Film in Tamil. In 2017, Guru Somasundaram was recognized as Behindwoods’ Best Actor, earning him the Gold Medal.
