Ismail was born and raised in Gujarat, India, and has collaborated with several famous composers like as Kalyanji Anand Ji, laxmikant-Pyarelal, Rajesh Roshan, Nadeem-Shravan, A. R. Rahman, Bappi Lahiri, Jatin Lalit, and more. When Sanjay Leela Bhansali cast him in one of his blockbuster movies, Ham Dil De Chuke Sanam, he finally broke through. He has worked with Jatin-Lalit before, performing violin for their film khamoshi: the musical. After that, he went on to score the film Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, for which he received widespread acclaim.
He stopped collaborating with Sanjay Leela Bhansali after the release of Devdas because of their contrasting creative styles. Ismail Darbar continued to score films after Devdas, but his work was mostly overlooked. Along with it, he also provided music for the 2005 film Kisna: the warrior poet, directed by Subhash Ghai. They have collaborated on 7 of the album’s 12 tunes, with him composing the rest. After A R Rahman left the film project to finish an international job, it fell to Ismail Darbar to compose the score for Kisna. Ismail Darbar has composed this music very well that Subhash says that he has composed well that you will be not able to distinguish which user composed by AR Rahman and which was composed by Ismail Darbar.
He was also one of the judges of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 along with Aadesh Shrivastava Himesh Reshammiya and Jatin Lalit. He again got the chance to be a judge of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007. In addition to his role on Saregamapa, he’ll also be one of the three judges on the second season of Amul STAR Voice of India. He’s a judge on a number of music competition shows, and he’s become very well-known for the fairness and objectivity of his decisions.
Under the direction of S Ramchandranan, in the year 2017, Ismail Darbar has released his first private music project called Rasiya Sajan.
