He has an older brother, Suriya, who is also a successful actor in Tamil cinema, and a younger sister, Brindha. He has an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and a graduate degree in Industrial Engineering from an MBA program. He moved back to India to work as an assistant director under Mani Ratnam because directing movies was his lifelong dream.
