Mani Ratnam later finished his script with the help of his friends, Ravi Shankar and Raman, the son of filmmaker S. Balachander. He quit his consulting gig to become part of the production team, but the film bombed and was finally scrapped. Though he intended to go into filmmaking, he was not happy with the films that were being produced in Tamil cinema. However, movies like P. Bharathiraja (16 Vayathinile, 1977), K. Balachander (Apoorva Raagangal, 1975), J. Mahendran (Mullum Malarum, 1978), and Uthiripookkal (1979) left him in awe (1979). At the time, he surrounded himself with like-minded individuals interested in breaking into the film industry, including P. C. Sreeram, Santhana Bharathi, and P. Vasu.

For the film Pallavi, he wrote the script. To produce his film, Anu Pallavi and his uncle Krishnamurthy consented to all of his terms. The likes of Balu Mahendra, B. Lenin, Thotta Tharani, and Ilaiyaraaja were all on hand for his first film, which he directed. For his work on this film, he was honoured in 1983 with the Karnataka State Government’s Best Screenplay Award. After Malayalam film producer N. G. John saw his work, he offered him the chance to helm the 1984 film Unaru. Pagal Nilavu, starring Murali and Revathi, was offered to G. Thyagarajan of Sathya Jyothi Films to direct in 1985. Mouna Ragam, Agni Natchathiram, Anjali, Roja, Dil Se (Hindi), O Kadhal Kanmani, and many others were among the many films he directed in Tamil and Hindi in the years that followed. His film work has earned him a number of accolades, including three Bollywood Filmfare Awards and six Filmfare Awards South. Suhasini, a former Tamil film actress, is Maniratnam’s wife; the couple wed in 1988 and have a son named Nandan Maniratnam.
