Even while still a student, Nayanthara started her modelling career on the side. Director Sathyan Anthikkad saw her work as a model and cast her in his film. After some initial reluctance, she agreed to make her acting debut in the Malayalam film Manassinakkare. She only planned on appearing in this one picture, but after its unexpected success, she was offered numerous other film roles.
She appeared in a pair of films that year. This trend began with Shaji Kailas’s Natturajavu. Vismayathumbathu was her second film of that year, and it was her first to star opposite Mohanlal. Fazil directed and produced the film for Ammu International; it was a psychological thriller. Her first film was Ayya (2005), directed by Hari, and it was her first role.
