Pooja Hegde is from a Tulu-speaking family and grew up in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Both Manjunath Hegde and Latha Hegde are her proud parents. They were born and raised in the city of Udupi, Karnataka. She also benefits from having an orthopaedic surgeon for an older sibling in Rishabh Hegde. She also speaks Kannada, English, Hindi, and Marathi in addition to Tulu. Once she began working in Telugu film, she realised she needed to learn the language. Attending M. M. K. College, she was active in both the dance and fashion scenes.
Hegde won the title of Miss India Talented 2009 but was knocked out of the Miss India 2009 competition early on. She tried again the following year, and this time she placed second in the Miss Universe India 2010 competition, and she also won the title of Miss India South Glamorous Hair 2010.
