Prakash Jha Biography

Prakash Jha Education

His Primary education was done in  Sainik School Tilaya, Koderma district and Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand. In the first year of his BSc Physics programme at Ramjas College, Delhi University, he dropped out to pursue a career in art and moved to Mumbai.

Prakash Jha Early Life

On February 27, 1952, Jha entered the world in the west Champaran region of Bihar, India. In the midst of his preparation for JJ School of Arts, he unexpectedly stumbled into the set of the film Dharma (1973). This inspired him to enter the film industry, so in 1973 he enrolled in a film editing school at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. The institute was closed for a long due to student agitation, but Jha didn’t waste any time getting to Mumbai and getting to work on his documentary. He left the programme before it was over.

Prakash Jha married Deepti Naval, an actress he had directed with in 1984 for his first feature film, Hip Hip Hurray. In 2002, the pair officially separated. Disha Jha, the couple’s daughter, works as an assistant director and producer.

Prakash Jha Career

Prakash Jha strives for widespread acclaim from both fans and critics alike. His path to making movies that are both emotionally engaging and financially successful proves it. After only one year of film school, he began editing movies on his own. In 1975, he debuted with the documentary Under the Blue. He kept directing documentaries for a while longer. He produced a politically charged documentary about the ‘Bihar Sharif Riots’ in 1984 called Faces after Storm. It received the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film despite being banned just days after its debut.

Gulzar scripted his first feature film, Hip Hip Hurray (1984), which marked his directorial debut. The film, which featured Raj Kiran and Dipti Naval, earned him the Best Director award from the All India Film Awards Association. After that, in 1984, he directed Damul, which was nominated for both the National Film Award and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film. His second film, Parinati (1986), was adapted from a novel by Vijaydan Detha and won the National Film Award for Best Costume Design and was named an Outstanding Film at the London Film Festival in 1988.

Commercially and critically successful, his 2003 action drama Gangaajal starred Ajay Devgn and Gracy Singh. It also took home the gold for “Best Film on Other Social Issues” at the National Film Awards. Its 2016 follow-up, Jai Gangaajal, starring Priyanka Chopra, fell short of viewers’ and critics’ lofty expectations.

In the 1980s, Prakash Jha founded Prakash Jha Productions, and in 1983, the company released its first film, Hip Hip Hurray. Damul (1984), Parinati (1986), Mrityudand (1997), Dil Kya Kare (1999), Gangaajal (2003), and Apaharan (2005) are only few of the films that have come out of this studio since then (2005).

Directed by Jha in 2016, Jai Gangaajal is a sequel to his 2003 film Gangaajal in which he also appeared. Although the film’s predecessor did well at the box office, this sequel was met with lacklustre reviews because of its predictable plot. His new album Saand Ki Aankh is expected to be released in 2019.
