Prakash Rai, better known as Prakash Raj, attended St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School in Bengaluru, Karnataka. From 1983 to 1985, he attended St. Joseph’s College of Commerce in Bengaluru, Karnataka, for his PUC (Pre-University Course). He returned to the same university to begin work on his Bachelor of Commerce degree, but he dropped out between 1985 and 1987 due to a disagreement with a professor.

The film Duet by K. Balachander marked his entry into the Tamil film industry after a few years spent working in the Kannada film and television industries. He rose to fame afterward as a commercially successful actor in Tamil films. His company, founded in remembrance, is called Duet Movies. Prakash has appeared in a number of Hindi-language films.

In 2003, he won the Nandi Award for Best Character Actor for his portrayal of a kickboxing champion who chooses fame and fortune above his family in the film Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi.
His role as Ali Bhai in Pokkiri (2007) earned him a nomination for Best Villain at the Vijay Awards, but it was his performance in the romantic comedy flick Mozhi that earned him the award for Best Supporting Actor. Since then, he has starred in several critically acclaimed films, including Singam (2010), Payanam and Ko (2011), Bodyguard (2012), and Chennaiyil Oru Naal (2013). (2013). In Dhoni (2012), he plays the role of the father of a fourteen-year-old cricket prodigy, while in Saguni, he plays a bad politician (2011).
O Kadhal Kanmani, S/O Satyamurthy, and Size Zero were all important works of his in 2015, and the following year he had success with Ko 2, Oopiri, and Kadavul Irukaan Kumaru.
