Prateik Babbar completed his primary education from Arya Vidya Mandir in Mumbai and later moved to Jai Hind College in Mumbai and St. Andrew’s College of Arts, Science and Commerce to pursue Bachelor of Arts.

Babbar’s parents, actor Raj Babbar and actress Smita Patil, had him on November 28, 1986. When Prateik was born, his mother tragically passed away from complications of childbirth. In Mumbai, Prateik was reared by his maternal grandparents.

He has mentioned in interviews that he had a tough relationship with his father while growing up, since his father was “always occupied with his other family”. Yet Prateik also claimed that he and his father had made up when he was an adult. Actors Nadira Babbar and Arya Babbar and Juhi Babbar are Prateik’s stepmother and half-siblings, respectively.

He started dating British actress Amy Jackson in 2011 while working on the film Ekk Deewana Tha. The following year they decided to separate. A lifelong addict, Babbar finally won his battle with drugs and alcohol in 2013. He entered treatment and therapy and has maintained his sobriety ever since.

Babbar worked as Prahlad Kakkar’s production assistant for a year while the two were making commercial films. Babbar was featured in a number of commercials during this time, including ones for KitKat and other snack food brands. In the Aamir Khan film Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, Babbar made his acting debut opposite Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza.

Critical acclaim and a slew of prizes came his way for playing Genelia’s character’s obnoxious, attention-seeking brother. Babbar was nominated for Best Male Debut and Best Supporting Actor at the 54th Annual Filmfare Awards, where he also won a Special Jury certificate. Later, the movie was a smashing financial success. After this breakthrough, he was in a string of forgettable flicks. The first of four films that year that Babbar was a part of, Dhobi Ghaat, directed by Kiran Rao, premiered to rave reviews at film festivals throughout the world.

In addition to his work with Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, and Deepika Padukone in Prakash Jha’s social drama Aarakshan, Babbar co-starred in the action-thriller Dum Maro Dum. He co-starred with Kalki Koechlin in 2011’s My Friend Pinto. Success with his subsequent films was limited, with Ekk Deewana Tha and Issaq both bombing at the box office. His first film, Auroni Taukhon (2014), starred him and Paoli Dam in their first major cinematic roles in Bengali. Sober since 2016, he enrolled in a method acting class at the Jeff Goldberg Studio. Once the school was through, Babbar’s first acting gig was in a short film named The Guitar.

His comedic drama Umrika, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015, marked his return to the feature film medium. The video, branded “#DilSeAzaad,” he starred in throughout 2017 brought attention to the prejudices that surround addiction and addicts. With Tiger Shroff as the film’s protagonist, Prateik returned to the big screen in 2018 with Baaghi 2, in which he played the antagonist Sunny for the first time. His subsequent film credits include Anubhav Sinha’s Mulk, in which he played Shahid Mohammed, and Nitin Kakkar’s Mitron. He starred alongside six other actors in the 2019 comedy-drama Chhichhore, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. In 2019, he co-starred with Rajinikanth in the Tamil language action thriller Darbar, which was written and directed by AR Murugadoss and produced by Allirajah Subaskaran. As expected, the picture did very well at the box office.
