Pritam Chakraborty Early Life

On June 14, 1971, Pritam Chakraborty entered the world to Bengali parents Anuradha and Prabodh Chakraborty. His father was a musician, so he had his first lessons in music from him and picked up guitar playing while he was still in school.

He honed his voice skills while studying and mastering the Tabla, Guitar, and Keyboard. After graduating in 1994 from India’s Film and Television Institute in Pune, he was approached about composing score for a film from Hungary.

Pritam Chakraborty Career

Pritam is now playing with the Bangla band Chandrabindoo. He played guitar in a band named Jotugriher Pakhi, which he and his classmates from the Presidency established. They even produced a cassette tape during that time period.

His music for the film Dhoom, directed by Gadhvi, was an enormous success. He won a Zee Cine Award for Best Track of the Year for the Dhoom title track, which was performed in both Hindi (by Sunidhi Chauhan) and English (by Tata Young).

His performance of “Mauja Hi Mauja” from Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met earned him the Best Track of the Year Zee Cine Award, his second such honour. His first Apsara Award was for Best Music Director, which he received for Jab We Met. Two more of Imtiaz Ali’s films that featured music by Pritam Chakraborty were Love Aaj Kal and Cocktail, both of which were commercial and critical successes and earned him a slew of accolades.

Pritam quickly followed it up by scoring the music for the hit comedy Barfi!, which earned him two Filmfare Awards. To this day, the soundtrack CD for Barfi remains one of his most lauded works. In 2013, he had worked on his 100th film as a Music Director in Bollywood, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara, and his resume included films like Race 2, Murder 3, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, Dhoom 3, and Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara. Yaariyan, Shaadi Ke Side Effects, and Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty were the first 2014 films on which his music appeared.

Over the span of his nearly two-decade long career, Pritam has composed songs for over a hundred Bollywood films. He is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including 5 Filmfare Awards, 4 Zee Cine Awards, 4 Star Screen Awards, 3 IIFA Awards, and 3 ITA Awards.
