Priyadarshan Biography

Priyadarshan Education

Priyadarshan attended Government Model School, Trivandrum and earned a Master of Arts in Philosophy from University College Trivandrum.

Priyadarshan Early Life

He tied the knot with Lissy, an actress, on December 13, 1990. Kalyani, an actress, and Sidharth are children of the couple, who split up in 2016.

Priyadarshan’s love in reading was fostered by the fact that his father worked as a college librarian. In his youth, he devoured books, and later, as a college student, he began producing sketches and short plays for All India Radio. It was P. Venu’s movies that had an impact on him. Mohanlal, M. G. Sreekumar, Suresh Kumar, Sanal Kumar, Jagadish, Maniyanpilla Raju, and Ashok Kumar were all close pals of his back then.

That’s when Mohanlal first started working in the film industry. They all moved to Chennai together in the hopes of making it big in the movie business. Priyadarshan, with Mohanlal’s encouragement, was given the opportunity to work as an assistant scriptwriter on a few films, and he soon began penning his own scripts, some of which went on to become box office hits. He was compelled to return to Kerala.

Priyadarshan Career

Priyadarshan has spent the past 40 years as a director and screenwriter in Indian cinema. He has directed nearly 90 films, primarily in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu, four of the five major languages spoken in India.

Shankar, the marketable hero, assisted Priyadarshan and his buddies Suresh Kumar and Sanal Kumar in 1984 when they planned to produce a film with the support of famous cinema investor Thiruvenkadam. Mohanlal, a rising star at the time, was chosen to play alongside Shankar in the parallel hero role. Thus, Priyadarshan made his directorial debut with the unexpectedly successful Poochakkoru Mookkuthi in 1984. It’s a low-budget slapstick comedy that has just finished a 100-day run in theatres all around Kerala.

Priyadarshan’s career took off in 1988, and it was a watershed year for him. Vellanakalude Nadu, starring Mohanlal, was directed by him from a story written by Sreenivasan. Corruption, the land mafia, and other societal problems were at the centre of this film. By far, Priyadarshan’s biggest commercial success to that date came from this picture. Next, T.Damodaran’s action picture Aryan about the Mumbai underworld played for 150 days in theatres. Even Priyadarshan’s career-highest grossing film, Chithram, was released that year (1988).

Hera Pheri’s Hindi release in 2000 irrevocably altered Priyadarshan’s path in Bollywood. The Bollywood remake of the Malayalam classic Ramjirao Speaking (1989), titled Hera Pheri, was a smashing commercial success. This movie, starring Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Tabu, and Paresh Rawal, has become a classic of Hindi Cinema. The film also launched the careers of directors Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar, who have collaborated on a number of successful films afterwards. Paresh Rawal became a staple in Priyadarshan movies after his breakthrough role in Hera Pheri.

It was in early 2018 that he began planning production on Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, an epic historical film in the Malayalam language that is set in the 16th century. Kunjali Marakkar IV, naval chieftain to the Zamorin of Calicut, is the inspiration for the film starring Mohanlal in the title role. By defending Calicut from the Portuguese for nearly a century, the Kunjali Marakkars established the first naval defence on the Indian coast. On December 2, 2021, the film was finally distributed to the public. The picture bombed at the box office and was panned by critics.
