Mr. R. Balakrishnan, better known by his nickname of “R. Balki,” was born on April 16, 1964, in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, India.
He had wanted to study filmmaking for as long as he could remember, and he even went through the interview process at the Madras Film Institute before bailing out on the panel.
Balki and Gauri Shinde have been married since 2007. She has worked in advertising and is also a writer, director, and producer for the film.

R. Balki is a director, screenwriter, and producer who primarily works in Bollywood and has received widespread critical acclaim for his films. He first gained attention with his debut directorial effort, Cheeni Kum (2007), and went on to achieve even greater success with Paa. R. Balki began his professional life at the young age of 23 and is now known as the former Group Chairman of Lowe Lintas, one of India’s most well-known and largest advertising agency.
Despite working for the agency, he had always been interested in filmmaking, even applying to the Madras Film Institute in an attempt to study directing during his time at the university. But he didn’t sign up for the school because he ditched the interview panel in the middle of the process. In later years, he attempted to pursue a post-baccalaureate degree in Masters in Computer Applications (MCA), but he was expelled from school after only three years due to chronic absence.
He first entered the field of advertising after responding to an ad for Mudra that he spotted in the newspaper. Advertisements such as “Daag Achche Hain” for Surf Excel and “Walk when you Talk” for the Idea Cellular network were produced by him, and they were massive hits during his advertising career. R. Balki’s career took a huge leap when, after spending some time working in ad agencies, he directed his first full-length feature, Cheeni Kum (2007). The film did well at the box office, but it was also praised by critics.
After the success of Cheeni Kum, R. Balki reunited with Indian cinema’s biggest star, Amitabh Bachchan, for 2009’s Paa, which went on to become one of Balki’s most critically acclaimed films. The film was not only critically acclaimed but also did extremely well at the box office. After 2009, the filmmaker had a break from directing movies, but he returned with Shamitabh (2015), making it three for three when it came to working with Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan. Along with the biographical drama Pad Man (2018), which stars Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte, and Sonam Kapoor, Dear Zindagi (2016) is another successful film he directed. The 2019 year will also see the release of his Mission Mangal.
