In 2007, Raj worked as an assistant director on the mystery drama fantasy No Smoking, directed by Anurag Kashyap again. His first film, Aamir (2008), was a psychological criminal thriller about a young Muslim man who spends a day at the mercy of Islamic fanatics planning to bomb the city, and it was widely praised by critics. Audiences and critics alike found plenty to admire in the film.

Following that, in 2011, he helmed the biographical thriller No One Killed Jessica, which was inspired by the Jessica Lal murder case. The film was well received at its release and continued to do so, earning four nominations at the 57th annual Filmfare Awards. Some of his previous works include the 2013 heist black comedy Ghanchakkar starring Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan, and the 2018 drama thriller Raid starring Ajay Devgn and Ileana D’cruz. This year sees the release of India’s Most Wanted, directed by Raj Kumar Gupta.
