Rajinikanth attended the Vivekananda Balaka Sangha school and Acharya Paathshala in Basavanagudi, Bangalore, for his formal education. He worked several occupations as a carpenter or coolie before becoming an actor to support himself. He started working for Bangalore Transport Service as a bus conductor. Rajinikanth enrolled in the Madras Film Institute with financial assistance from a friend, Raj Bahadur. Rajini first met the director, K Balachander, while acting in a stage production at the Madras Film Institute. Balachander then offered Rajini a part in his Tamil film.
