As the seventh of Kunjan Pillai and Padmini Amma’s children, Ravi grew up in Maduranthakam. Ravi was greatly influenced and inspired by his older brother, the cinematographer Ramachandra Babu, who studied at the Pune Film Institute in the 1970s. As a child growing up in the 1970s, Ravi was exposed to the new wave of French cinema and became familiar with directors like Truffaut and Gordard. Once a closet painter on the side, Ravi now works alongside his brother as an assistant cinematographer, where he is able to learn the technical side of the filmmaking trade.

K. Ramachandra Babu, an accomplished cinematographer, has a younger brother named Ravi Chandran. He has two sons with his wife, Hemalata, and they live in Mumbai. His son Santhana Krishnan became a film director and producer like him.

In 1984, Ravi K.Chandran got his start in the film industry by assisting his brother, cinematographer Ramachandra Babu ISC, and later, his friend and fellow filmmaker, Rajiv Menon, on a few Malayalam films. From his beginnings as an assistant cameraman on the Malayalam film Kilukkampetti to his directing role on the critically acclaimed film Virasat, for which he received numerous awards, Ravi has had a long and distinguished career behind the camera.
