Reema did her schooling completely from Delhi Public School and then moved to Sophia College in Mumbai to complete Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and later on moved to Sophia Polytechnic, Cumballa Hill in Mumbai to pursue Post Graduate Diploma in Social Communications Media.

Reema Kagti stated in an interview that her family is originally from the village of Borhapjan in the Tinsukia district of Assam and that her father is a farmer. She also mentioned that after finishing high school in Delhi, she uprooted to Mumbai.

She was always composing tales of adventure and intrigue in her youth. When she sold her first story to Tinkle Magazine, she made $25. Kagti skipped third grade to go to the theatre and see Salaam Bombay. The experience solidified her resolve to pursue a career in filmmaking. Early in her career, she worked as an assistant director on cult classics including Lagaan (2001) and Dil Chahta Hai (2001). Over the years, Reema has been an indispensable part of Excel Entertainment’s movies, as she has worked alongside directors Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar on numerous projects. These include the war drama Lakshya (2004) and the buddy road movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011). Aside from these, she has written the screenplays for films including Bombay Talkies (2013) and Dil Dhadakne Do (2008), and she worked alongside Mira Nair on the set of the historical drama Vanity Fair (2015).

Reema directed Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji, and Kareena Kapoor Khan in the 2012 mystery thriller Talaash after making her directorial debut with the highly praised comedy-drama Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. The film was well-received by both audiences and reviewers, as it chronicled a police officer’s efforts to investigate a peculiar crime while also coming to terms with the sudden death of his son. Over 1.7 billion Indian rupees was made from the ticket sales of Talaash, and 83% of critics on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a positive grade.

In 2018, Reema made her third appearance in the director’s chair with the historical sports drama Gold, which told the narrative of India’s first Olympic gold medal in its history. Gold, starring an ensemble cast led by Akshay Kumar, was co-produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. Gully Boy is one of her 2019 offerings.
