In 1956, on September 8th, Ronnie Screwvala was born in Bombay, Maharashtra. Ronnie Screwvala was born into a modest Parsee family and grew up in a modest environment. His dad was a high-up at British medical device manufacturers J L Morrison and Smith & Nephew.

Ronnie Screwvala is a brilliant businessman with several accomplishments to his name. He first established Laser, India’s preeminent toothbrush manufacturer, which currently turns out 6 million brushes every month for the market’s most popular brands. His Tele-Shopping Network (TSN) was an early example of online retail in India, and he is also credited with introducing cable TV to the country in 1981.
He then proceeded to locate the United Studios, a landmark film production facility in South Asia. In 1990, Screwvala established the UTV Group as a holding company for his several film production companies, video game studio, and media production facilities. In 2005, it began trading as a publicly traded company. The Walt Disney Company made the largest foreign investment in India when it purchased a 15% share in UTV Global Broadcasting in 2008 for Rs. 118.98 crores. This was followed by the purchase of a 32.1% stake in UTV Software Communications Ltd for Rs. 805.05 crores. Screwvala sold the business to the WDC in its entirety in 2012. Ronnie and his wife Zarina founded the Swades Foundation. The initiative aims to alleviate poverty for one million people through improved access to education and employment. Now serving 2000 villages throughout 3000 square kilometres of Raigad, Maharashtra, its focus is on improving access to clean water, proper sanitation, quality healthcare, and quality education in those communities.
In 2015, Screwvala seized the chance to pioneer new territory in the education industry by co-founding upGrad, India’s leading online education provider. It is a platform for higher education that offers courses in Data Science, Technology, and Management to students, professionals, and businesses.
