After relocating from Delhi with his family, Sarathkumar Ramanathan attended Rajah Muthiah High School in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He continued his education at Chennai’s Indian Institute of Technology Madras’ Central School. The final stop on his educational journey was at St. Patrick’s Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai, where he graduated with honors.

First, he attended Loyola College in Chennai, and then he transferred to The New College in the same city to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He was an active member of his high school and university sports teams, competing in a variety of sporting events, and playing football, cricket, and hockey. He participated in the Republic Day parade of 1970 as a member of the National Cadet Corps (NCC), specifically the Air Wing.

Sarathkumar attended The New College, Chennai, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science. After completing his education, he entered the workforce in the field of journalism. He quickly quit his job to focus on acting.

In 1986, with the Telugu film Samajamlo Sthree, he made his film debut. A couple of years later, in the film Kan Simittum Neram, he made his debut in Tamil cinema. He had multiple roles in the film, including producer. His career took off after his 1990 debut in the Tamil film Pulan Visaranai. He won Best Villain at the box office for his role in this film.

Pulan Visaranai (1990), Samundi (1992), Surya Vamsam (1997), Natpukaaga (1998), Pazhassi Raja (2009), Muni 2: Kanchana (2011), and Raajakumara (2017) are just a few of the films in which he has starred that are worth mentioning. Paambhu Sattai (2015), Indu Enna Maayam (2015), Pulivaal (2014), Kannamoochi Yenada (2007), and Kan Simittum Neram (2007) are just a few of the films that Sarathkumar has produced (1988). He directed the 2015 film Thalaimagan and penned the 2015 film Sandamarutham (2006). Bharat Ane Nenu, Naa Peru Surya – Naa Illu India, and Saakshyam are all films he released in 2018. The year 1996 marked the beginning of R. Sarathkumar’s political career when he enrolled with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He ran in the Lok Sabha elections in 1998, representing the Tamil Nadu city of Tirunelveli. He came up short, but only by a margin of 6904 votes. After being elected to the Rajya Sabha in July 2001, he and his second wife, Raadhika, eventually switched parties and voted for the AIADMK in the 2006 Assembly elections. Because he needed “undivided focus” as president of the South Indian Artistes’ Association, he resigned from the AIADMK in November 2006.
