Shashank Khaitan completed his primary education from St. Xavier’s High School in Pune and did his graduation from University of Pune.
Shashank Khaitan Early Life
While his parents were born in Kolkata, Khaitan spent his childhood in Nashik, Maharashtra, where he graduated from high school. From an early age on, he enjoyed movies, but he was more into sports than that at first, particularly cricket and tennis. He made the decision to enter the entertainment industry when he was only 17 years old. He first gained notoriety as a dancing teacher who hosted nationwide events. In Mumbai, he was confident that his goals might be realised.
With the goal of breaking into the film industry, Khaitan enrolled at Whistling Woods International Institute (a film institute founded and financed by acclaimed filmmaker Subhash Ghai). He says the institute prepared him technically and that the instructors, many of whom are working professionals in the film industry, made him feel at ease on set by often encouraging pupils to tag along. Khaitan’s debut movie, Sherwani Kahaan Hai, was filmed in part at Whistling Woods with the help of some of his peers, but the project ultimately failed.
In 2008, Khaitan played the role of Manohar in Arundhati Sen Verma’s Roorkee By-Pass and worked as a production assistant on Subhash Ghai’s Black & White and Yuvvraaj. In the Disney dance drama sequel ABCD 2, starring Varun Dhawan, he had a small role as a judge at the Bengaluru preliminary round for the World Dance Championship.
Before that, he was in Yash Raj Films’ Ishaqzaade, a romantic action-drama starring Arjun Kapoor and directed by Habib Faisal. Dharma Chauhan, one of Kapoor’s characters, Parma Chauhan’s brothers, was played by Khaitan.
Shashank Khaitan Career
Originally, Khaitan intended for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania to follow in the footsteps of Bunty Aur Babli and be about a pair of con artists. However, as he continued writing, he discovered that his characters were more likeable and romantic than he had originally planned. Khaitan credits DDLJ and Casablanca with inspiring the storyline, while the film itself pays homage to both DDLJ and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
In an effort to prove his theory that Bollywood has not made a great love story since Jab We Met, Khaitan made an effort to create more realistic and relatable characters while still communicating an epic romance. He defends the film by saying that the fact that it repeats several tired Bollywood tropes like parental approbation shows that Indian society hasn’t progressed much since DDLJ was made.
Khaitan delivered his script, then titled Humpty Sharma Di Love Story, to Dharma Productions after completing the first draught. After reading the script, Karan Johar expressed enthusiasm and announced that Dharma Productions would produce the picture, with the caveat that he was unsure whether or not Khaitan would helm the project. After Khaitan made a few tweaks to the script, Johar gave him the go light to direct.
In the past at Dharma, most directors were promoted from inside; in this case, however, they were all former assistants. After seeing them in Student of the Year, Khaitan decided to cast Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in his film. It was important to Khaitan that everyone involved in the production “keep it real” and be well-prepared for each scene before they filmed it. After its July 2014 release, the picture did very well at the box office.
