He studiat his school at A railway school in Hyderabad, then he went to Railway Degree College for Commerce, Secunderabad, Telangana Then he did Diploma in Drama in  Osmania University, Hyderabad, Telangana. Tanikella made his acting debut in the Telugu film Ladies Tailor in 1985, in which he played a police officer. ‘Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi Recording Dance Troupe’ was his second film in over two years. In 1989 he appeared in the Telugu films Siva, Swarakalpana, and Chettu Kinda Pleader. Seetharamaiah Gari Manavaralu (1991), Money Money (1994), Big Boss (1995), Pellichoresuttam (1997), and Samudram (2000) are just a few of the many successful Telugu films he was in during the 1990s (1999).

He penned the play “Adde Kompa” during his time as a college student. He took home the top prize because the audience loved his play. It was about the middle of the 1970s that he made friends with Telugu actor Rallapalli’s acquaintance. Tanikella enlisted his help in penning scripts for plays, including both conversation and action. Then, per Rallapalli’s recommendation, he uprooted and moved to Chennai. He then played the role of a 70-year-old man in a theatre play titled ‘Mugimpi Lai Katha’ which was written by Rallapalli. The success of the play catapulted him into the public eye. Later, when Rallapalli’s theatre troupe “Sri Murali Kalanilayam” was looking for a playwright, he hired Tanikella. He agreed to it and worked as a playwright for 10 plays for the theatre company. His drama “Gograhanam” was honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Award, India’s highest literary honour. Apart from writing plays, he has also performed in many theatre plays. Some of his popular plays are Jambu Dweepam, Chal Chal Gurram, Naalugo Kothi, Kokkorokko, and Gaardhabhaandam. He has also worked in many Telugu playlets including Gaardhabhanda, Grahanam Pattina Ratri, Sani Grahalu, Goyyi, Panjaram Lo Elaka, and Hulakki.

In the 1970s, Bharani was performing in theatre productions, and it was then that he met Rallapalli, a future star of Tollywood. Bharani enlisted his assistance and began penning short monologues and playacting situations. He pursued further education and earned a diploma in the performing arts later on. In the end, he decided to take Rallapalli up on his suggestion and relocate to Chennai.

Dialogues for films such as Ladies Tailor (1986), Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi Recording Dance Troupe (1987), Varasudochhadu (1988), Chettu Kinda Pleader (1989), Swara Kalpana (1989), Shiva (1989), and Seenu Vasanthi Lakshmi (1989) are among his film credits. He began his career with Kanchu Kavachum in 1984. (2004). In addition, he composed and performed the song’s lyrics for “Gundammagaari Manavadu” (Bhale Bhaleti Mandu).

Beginning with Ladies Tailor (1985) and Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi Recording Dance Troupe (1987), in which he played the role of Dora Babu, he has appeared in over 750 films. Nagarjuna acted in Ram Gopal Varma’s successful film Shiva in 1989. Thanks to the success of the film Shiva, he became widely known. His portrayal of Nanaji in the film captivated the whole Telugu audience.
In 1996, he appeared in the comedy flick Bombay Priyudu. The Nandi award for Best Villain went to him because of his formidable antagonistic role in Samudram. In films like Manmadhudu (2002), Okariki Okaru (2003), Samba (2004), Malliswari, Godavari (2006), and Happy (2009), he took on more serious parts after the year 2000. (2006).
Mithunam, a 2012 Telugu drama starring S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and Lakshmi, was directed by him. For his work on this picture, he was honoured with the CineMAA Award Special Jury Award for Best Direction.

With the album title meaning “The Lord Shiva in you and the Lord Shiva in me may dominate the universe,” he penned seven Telugu devotional songs. Not only did he compose the theme songs for the films Nalona sivudu galadu and Shahabash Raa Shankara, he also sang the titlesongs.
