Thiagarajan Kumararaja Career

In 2011, he directed his first movie, the gangster flick Aaranya Kaandam. At the 59th National Film Awards, the film received praise from critics and won him the Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director. He has performed in well-known films like X: Past Is Present, Yennai Arindhaal, Aneethi Kathaigal, and Aaranya Kaandam. Super Deluxe, his upcoming project, is planned for release in November 2018. In December 2006, Kumararaja started drafting the script for his debut film. Despite his initial intention to create a “racy film” he wrote the climactic segment first before adding multiple storylines he later admitted that the movie was leisurely paced and took its time to develop.

In January 2007, Kumararaja met Charan and told him the story for two hours. Filming was planned to start by the end of 2007,, however, Charan decided to make another movie first. Aaranya Kaandam, which starred Ravi Krishna and Sampath Raj and introduced Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff to Tamil cinema, was released in December 2008. The entire movie, which was totally filmed in and around Chennai, was finished by Kumararaja in more than one and a half years.  The movie ran into difficulty after it was finished because the regional censor board in Chennai refused to approve it and demanded 52 changes because of profanity and excessive violence.  Kumararaja stated that the movie was not intended for children and was instead produced for an adult audience.  He also added that he anticipated challenges with censoring.

He and Charan approached the Central Tribunal in Delhi, which approved the film since he wanted to show the movie to audiences in an unflinching manner. Aaranya Kaandam, dubbed as the first neo-noir film in Tamil cinema, debuted to strong critical acclaim. It went on to win two awards at the 59th National Film Awards, including the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director for Kumararaja. It also won the Grand Jury Award for Best Film at the 2010 South Asian International Film Festival.  He served as a script consultant for the Tamil movie Yennai Arindhaal, which Gautham Vasudev Menon co-wrote and directed, in 2015.
