Manjunatha Rao and Anusuya gave birth to Upendra Rao in Kundapura, Udupi district, former state of Mysore (now Karnataka). He was the younger brother of Sudheendra Rao, the elder son of his parents. Rao’s family was not wealthy. He had an eye condition as a newborn, which gave him the capacity to roll his eyes, as seen in many of his movies.
