She attended Maneckji Cooper, Juhu School in Mumbai and then transferred to St. Xavier’s College in the city to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree. She then enrolled at New York’s Tisch School of the Arts to study filmmaking.

Javed Akhtar, her father, is a poet and screenwriter. Honey Irani, her mother, was an actress and writer. Her stepmother is Bollywood starlet Shabana Azmi. Her younger sibling is the multitalented actor, producer, director, screenwriter, and singer Farhan Akhtar. Her ancestor Muztar Khairabadi was a famous poet in the Urdu language. Also an Urdu poet was her grandpa, Jan Nisar Akhtar. She is the great-great-granddaughter of Fazl-e-Haq-Khairabadi, a prominent player in the Indian Freedom Revolution of 1857 from her hometown of Khairabad and a scholar of Islamic studies and theology who is remembered for editing Mirza Ghalib’s first diwan at the poet’s request.
They say Zoya is married to Sharic Sequeira, an assistant director and producer. When a mutual acquaintance of Sharic’s uploaded a photo of the two of them on Instagram in 2021, the wedding rumours began. With the caption “Just Married,” Zoya Akhtar seems to be alluding to her wedding to Sharic.

Starting off, Zoya directed the music video “Price of Bullets.” The band Pentagram was featured in the song video. As a casting director, her next projects were “Dil Chahta Hai” and “Split Wide Open.” On both “Dil Chahta Hai” and “Lakshya,” she worked as Farhan Akhtar’s assistant.
Her first film as director, “Luck By Chance,” premiered in 2009. Besides helming the film, she also wrote the story and script. She also has executive producing experience with Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., founded by Reema Kagti, and Excel Entertainment.
Her 2011 film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” was a critical and commercial success. The next film Zoya directed was “Dil Dhadhakne Do,” which featured Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh. She directed the biopic “Gully Boy,” about two Mumbai rappers named Divine and Naezy, in 2019.
