He graduated with a degree in Visual Communication from the Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai, and at the age of 19, he began working as an assistant director on the films Enthiran and Nanban, remakes of the Hindi film 3 Idiots. Many people responded enthusiastically to his short film Mugaputhagam across all forms of media. In 2013, Atlee made his directing debut with the romantic comedy film Raja Rani, which starred Arya, Jai, Nayanthara, Nazriya Nazim, and Sathyaraj and was produced by AR Murugadoss, Fox star studios, and Next Big Films.
