Azhagam Perumal Biography

Azhagam Perumal Education

He enrolled to the Adyar Film Institute soon after graduating but was met with strong resistance from his family. Nevertheless, he graduated from the institute in 1991 and was awarded the Gold Medal. He once served as the legendary director Mani Ratnam’s assistant director from the film Thalapathi until Iruvar before beginning his acting career. When Mani Ratnam began filming Alaipayuthey, he was looking for someone to play the eccentric house owner similar to Jagathy Sreekumar. Eventually, Azhagam Perumal filled the role, and it is his debut film.

Azhagam Perumal Early Life

He initially announced Mudhal Mudhalaaga, a romantic drama starring Arvind Swamy and Karisma Kapoor, as his directorial debut in the year 1998, but the film was not successful. Then he began filming the romantic comedy film Dumm Dumm Dumm with R. Madhavan and Jyothika for which Mani Ratnam served as the screenwriter and producer. Udhaya, which starred Vijay and Simran in the lead roles, was released with a significant delay. The film was subsequently released in 2001 and was a huge success. He once offered him a role after Alaipayuthe, but he turned it down because he wanted to finish and revive Udhaya by the beginning of 2004.

Before leaving to work on an independent project, Azhagam Perumal assisted Mani Ratnam from Thalapathi to Iruvar. Mani Ratnam was looking for someone like Jagathy Sreekumar to play the eccentric house owner when he was filming Alaipayuthey, but Azhagam Perumal ultimately filled the role and made his acting debut,  He had initially declared Mudhal Mudhalaaga, a love story starring Arvind Swamy and Karisma Kapoor, as his directorial debut in 1998. Despite starting production, the movie was put on hold indefinitely.

Then, in 1999, he began filming Udhaya, which starred Vijay and Simran, but the production of the movie was delayed as a result of the producer’s financial difficulties. In 2000, Azhagam Perumal also discussed producing the movie Hijack, but it never materialized. In 2004, he attempted to make the movie with Vikram, but the endeavor was unsuccessful. 

The romantic comedy Dumm Dumm Dumm, starring R. Madhavan and Jyothika, and produced by his mentor Mani Ratnam, served as his eventual directorial debut. The movie was a hit when it came out in 2001.  He received acting offers after Alaipayuthey, but he turned them down because he wanted to finish and revive Udhaya by the beginning of 2004.
