Ganja Karuppu Career

Karuppu made his acting debut as a ganja farm labourer in Bala’s film Pithamagan (2003). Because of the role, he was credited as Ganja Karuppu in future films. Later in the 2000s, he became a regular in filmmakers’ casting calls for rural films like Ameer’s Raam (2005) and Paruthiveeran (2007), Sasikumar’s Subramaniapuram (2008), Samuthirakani’s Naadodigal (2009), and Sargunam’s Kalavani (2011). (2010). In the same year, he co-starred with Santhanam in S Pictures’ production of Chimbudevan’s Arai En 305-il Kadavul (2008). Due to his rising star status at the time, Dhanasekaran cast him in the lead role of the film Mannar Valaikuda. The film on the plight of the fishing community made some headway, but it was never released in theatres.

As of 2012, Karuppu was scheduled to make his Bollywood debut with the Hindi remake of Samuthirakani’s Poraali (2011). Sadly, production on the film never got off the ground. He had already announced that he will be using the moniker “Ganja Khan” throughout his time in the Hindi film industry. Karuppu decided to try his hand at film production with 2014’s Velmurugan Borewells, but the film was plagued by setbacks and received a low-profile theatrical distribution, costing him a small fortune. Later on, Karuppu was criticised by Director Bala for doing something that may potentially ruin his acting career without any good reason. After taking a hiatus from major roles in films, Karuppu returned with prominent performances in Isai (2015) and Dharma Durai (2017), both directed by S. J. Surya (2016).

A reality TV star in Tamil Nadu, he appeared on Kamal Haasan’s Bigg Boss in its inaugural season in 2017. He was kicked off the show on day 14 due to his ongoing feud with fellow actor Bharani.
