As the son of Malayali father Vasudeva Menon and Tamil mother Uma, Gautham Menon was born on 25 February 1973 in Ottapalam, a town in the Palakkad region of Kerala. Though he was born in Kerala, he spent his formative years in Anna Nagar, Chennai. The death of his father occurred in 2007. Menon attended Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School for his secondary education. He went on to graduate from Mookambigai College of Engineering, Pudukkottai with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. While his native language is English, he is also conversant in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.

Gautham Vasudev Menon Career

In 1997, he became an assistant director on the set of the film Minsara Kanavu after apprenticing with director Rajiv Menon. Even more impressively, he had a little part in that film. After that, he directed the critically acclaimed realistic thriller Kaakha Kaakha, as well as the critically acclaimed investigative thriller Vettaiyadu Vilaitadu.

A lot of the main characters in Menon’s films, including Minnale, Vaaranam Aayiram, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, Neethaane En Ponvasantham, and Enai Noki Paayum Thota, are based on real-life students from the same university course. He told his parents he wanted to become a director after seeing movies like Dead Poets Society (1989) and Nayakan (1987), both of which influenced his decision. His mother advised him to follow in the footsteps of filmmaker Rajiv Menon and pursue a career in commercial filmmaking. He then had a cameo in Minsara Kanavu (1997), in which he also served as an assistant director

Kaakha Kaakha (2003), starring Suriya, Jyothika, and Jeevan, was Gautham Menon’s return to directing. In contrast to other Tamil films of the era, this one focused on the private life of a police officer and how he was influenced by gangsters. Menon said he was motivated to produce the movie after reading about specialists who kill gangsters and how their families get threatening calls in return. He tried to cast Madhavan, Ajith Kumar, and Vikram in the lead roles but was unsuccessful since none of them wanted to play a police officer.
