A devout Christian family raised Harris Jayaraj in Chennai, where he was born and raised. His mother is a Hindu Naidu, and his father comes from a Tamil Christian family. He went to Krishnaswamy Matric School to study. Harris started receiving formal tuition in Carnatic music at the age of six. His father, S. M. Jayakumar, was a well-known film guitarist who frequently collaborated with musicians such as T. M. Soundararajan, A. L. Raghavan, M.S. Viswanathan, the Soolamangalam Sisters, K. J. Yesudas, S. Janaki, Shankar Ganesh, S.P. Balasubramaniam, K. V. Mahadevan, Malaysia Vasudevan, L. R.
