During his time at NSD, when he met his lifelong buddy Tigmanshu Dhulia in 1984, Irrfan was awarded a scholarship to pursue his Master of Arts degree. He attended the National School of Drama for three years and earned a diploma in acting (NSD). He left NSD and began a successful acting career in Mumbai.

Irrfan had been an avid cricketer ever since he was a kid, and he and his best friend, Satish Sharma, had played a lot of games together. Irrfan participated in the CK Nayudu Tournament as a player. He was a member of a prominent Jaipur family of Nawab Muslim Pathans who spoke Pashto. Sahabzada Yaseen Ali Khan’s father was a prosperous businessman from the village of Khajuriya in the Tonk district of Rajasthan. Begum Khan, Irrfan’s mother, was a member of the Tonk Hakim caste and passed away in Jaipur on April 25, 2020, at the age of 95, four days before Irrfan.

Irrfan Khan first appeared on screen in the 1985 Doordarshan serial Shrikant. Bharat Ek Khoj (1988), Chanakya (1991), Banegi Apni Baat (1993), AnooGoonj (1993), Sara Jahan Hamara (1994), Chandrakanta (1994), Star Bestsellers (1995), and Sparsh (1996) were only a few of the other TV shows in which he appeared (1995). Irrfan first gained attention with his roles in the critically acclaimed 1990 film Ek Doctor Ki Maut (in which he costarred with Pankaj Kapoor as a teenage journalist) and the Oscar-nominated 1998 film Such a Long Journey (in which he played Gustad’s father).
