Karthi was born in Madras, Tamil Nadu, in India (now Chennai). He completed his primary and secondary education at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and St. Bede Anglo-Indian Upper Secondary School in Chennai. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Chennai’s Crescent Engineering College. After receiving his degree, he thought about going to college abroad and started working as an engineering consultant in Chennai. “I made about 5,000 each month and found the work to be repetitive, and that’s when I realised I needed pursue something greater,” he said in an interview. Karthi received assistance in order to go graduate school in the US. His studies at Binghamton University in New York culminated to a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering, which he received upon graduation. He continued his studies while enrolling in elective filmmaking classes.

The second child of actor Sivakumar and his wife Lakshmi is Karthi. Karthi has two siblings: a younger sister named Brindha and an older brother named Suriya who was already a well-known actor at the time of Karthi’s film debut. Jyothika, a Tamil actress, is Karthi’s in-law. Karthi wed Ranjani Chinnaswamy, an English literature master’s graduate from Stella Maris College in Chennai, on July 3, 2011. On April 29, 2011, they exchanged vows in Ranjani’s birthplace of Goundampalayam, Erode District, then was married in the CODISSIA Exhibition Center in Coimbatore. The family’s patriarchs planned the wedding. Their daughter Umayaal was born on January 11, 2013.

He enrolled in introductory filmmaking courses at State University of New York because he wanted to become a filmmaker. Karthi is essentially a member of a filmmaking family; his father and, more recently, his brother Surya, are both successful actors. Karthi made the decision to become a hero, and in 2007 he finally achieved professional success.
