Since the family was living in Tamil Nadu at the time, he attended Shrine Vailankanni Senior Secondary School in T. Nagar, Chennai, and St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School in Coonoor for his first education. He received his schooling from The NSS Public School Perunthanni, St. Mary’s Residential Central School, Poojappura (which was close to his home in Chengallur) after the family moved to Kerala. There, he performed in a number of plays and skits for the school’s Annual Day Celebrations. At Sainik School Kazhakoottam and Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram, he finished his secondary education. Along with his brother Indrajith Sukumaran, Prithviraj. While in school, he also took part in debates and elocution contests. Prithviraj is the only person to date to have won “Mr LA Fest” in back-to-back years at the annual inter-school arts competition held at Loyola School in Thiruvananthapuram.

He received a call from filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan for a chance in the movies while earning his bachelor’s degree in information technology at the University of Tasmania in Australia to play the lead part in his film Nandanam.

His parents, renowned Malayalam film actors Sukumaran and Mallika, were both born in Trivandrum, Kerala. Both his sister-in-law Poornima and his older brother Indrajith Sukumaran are performers. St. Mary’s School, Poojappura, which was close to his Chengallur house, served as his major educational institution. He participated in a number of plays and skits for the annual day celebrations here. His father allegedly told his mother that he was intended for acting after watching him perform in one of the annuals as Sukumaran.

He was inundated with offers from the industry after a respectable performance in Nandanam, so he chose to put off his education and think about acting. On April 25, 2011, Prithviraj wed BBC reporter Supriya Menon at a resort close to Palakkad.
