Karthik completed his education at SBOA Matriculation and Higher Secondary School in Madurai, following which he enrolled in the Thiagarajar College of Engineering to study Mechatronics. He performed theatre performances and skits when he was a college student. Gajaraj, his father who is also an actor, has appeared in numerous supporting parts in movies like Mundasupatti and Kabali.

Karthik Subbaraj entered this world on March 19, 1983. He was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The SBOA Matriculation and Higher Secondary School in Madurai was his first stop on the path to a degree in Mechatronics from Thiagarajar College of Engineering. When he was a college student, he frequently participated in dramatic performances. His father, Gajaraj, has appeared in films like Onaayum Aattukuttiyum and Mundasupatti in small but notable roles. He spent some time as a software engineer in Bangalore. During this time, a passion for filmmaking began to develop in him. During Sanjay Nambiar’s one-day workshop, he was introduced to the fundamentals of filmmaking.

In Madurai, he created the short film that would become a Nalaya Iyakunar winner: Kaatchipizhai. Karthik planned to make Jigarthanda first, but he ran out of money before he could finish production. After that, he thought with the backstory for the cheap pizza that debuted the 7.1 surround sound. Due to its financial success, the film was adapted into Hindi, Bengali, and Kannada. This opened the door for him to direct Jigarthanda, a film that was well appreciated by critics and awarded the lead actor, Bobby Simha, a national award. The likes of Mani Ratnam and S.

Shankar, two of the most renowned filmmakers in India, have both complimented Subbaraj.  Subbaraj’s third film, Iraivi (2016), was well-received by critics, and he was singled out for his depiction of society’s treatment of women. The film also explored the myriad ways in which men’s views and actions can change the course of a woman’s life. Through the character of SJ Surya, he also revealed the suffering he endured at the hands of his second film’s producer. After that, he moved on to helm Mercury (2018), starring Prabhu Deva, which was a silent thriller but was not a commercial success. A web serial, Kallachirippu, was created by him and released under the Stone bench label.

Rajinikanth’s 166th film was directed by Subbaraj, and it was the action movie Petta (2019). The film was produced by Sun Pictures’ Kalanithi Maran, and Anirudh Ravichander scored it to replace Santhosh Narayanan, who had done so for the director’s prior efforts. This film marked Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s first appearance in a Tamil cinema. Meanwhile, he produced Penguin, an Amazon original film starring Keerthy Suresh. With Jai and Vani Bhojan, he created the web series Triples for Hotstar Originals. Similarly, he helmed the film Mahaan, starring Vikram, which had its world premiere on Amazon Prime Video.
