Shankar was born on August 17, 1963, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, to parents Muthulakshmi and Shanmugam of the Thanjavur Kallar Community. He graduated from Central Polytechnic College with a diploma in mechanical engineering prior to working in the film industry. After witnessing one of Shankar and his group’s impromptu drama performances, director S. A. Chandrasekhar hired him as a screenwriter. After graduating from college, Shankar found employment as a quality control supervisor, but he sensed a void in his life that could only be filled by engaging in artistic pursuits. He plunged headfirst into the world of theatre to polish his craft because he had always wanted to write and act.

Shankar was born on August 17, 1963, to parents Muthulakshmi and Shanmugam of the Thanjavur Kallar Community, in the city of Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. Before working in movies, he earned a diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Central Polytechnic College. Director S. A. Chandrasekhar, who happened to catch one of Shankar and his team’s impromptu drama performances, recruited him as a screenwriter.

Shankar worked as a Quality Control Supervisor after finishing college, but he felt an emptiness in his life that could only be filled by doing something he enjoyed creatively. He had always wanted to write and act, so he dove headfirst into the world of theatre to hone his craft.

S. Shankar Career

As a young man, Shankar worked as a director’s assistant for people like Pavithran and S. A. Chandrasekhar. His debut film, Jai Shiv Shankar (1990), was directed by S. A. Chandrasekhar and produced by renowned actor Rajesh Khanna. His first production as a filmmaker was the 1993 Tamil film Gentleman. With the Anil Kapoor-starring movie Nayak (2001), he made his acting debut in Hindi cinema. His filmmaking credits include Indian (Tamil), Jeans, Shivaji, Robot (renamed Enthiran; at the time, the most expensive Indian film), Nanban, I, etc.
Shankar began work on sci-fi 2.0 in 2015 following the economic success of Enthiran in 2010. With a budget of 543 crores (about $76 million), it is the most expensive Indian film ever made. Following that, he began producing Indian2, the follow-up to his Tamil feature Indian and Currently he is working with Tollywood superstar Ram Charan under the working title called RC 15.
