Karunakaran attended Sri Akilandeswari Vidyalaya in Trichy for secondary education and went on to earn a chemical engineering degree from Sastra University.
Karunakaran Early Life
On September 21, 1981, Karunakaran was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He was born in New Delhi to a father who had worked for RAW. Karunakaran met his future companion and fellow short filmmaker Nalan Kumarasamy in Chennai before relocating to Trichy with his parents. After finishing college, he pursued a career in information technology and eventually found employment with Accenture.
Karunakaran Career
He worked as an IT specialist for Accenture before he became famous in Hollywood. When his childhood buddy and aspiring filmmaker Nalan Kumarswamy asked him to star in a short film, he decided to give acting a try. With gaining recognition for his performances in short films, he was given his big break in feature films by renowned actor and director Sundar C, and he became a household name after his stellar performance as the lead actor Vijay Sethupathi’s friend in Pizza (2012).
Karunakaran followed up his breakout role in Pizza with another stellar performance in Soodhu Kavvum (2013), earning him his first nomination for a Vijay Award in the Best Supporting Actor category. The actor was inundated with offers after 2013 and has since appeared in more than 30 films, primarily in supporting roles. At a later time, Director Nalan approached him about appearing in a short film he was creating for the Naalaya Iyakkunar reality show. He also had little roles in films directed by Sundar C. When he was cast as Vijay Sethupathi’s companion in Karthik Subbaraj’s Pizza, he shot to fame (2012). Karunakaran’s performances in Nalan’s first feature film, Soodhu Kavvum, were so well received that Nalan cast him in subsequent films.
