The show originally starred Shweta Tiwari and Cezzane Khan as Prerna Sharma, Anurag Basu, Rishabh Bajaj, and Komolika Majumdar, but later cast Hiten Tejwani, Ronit Roy, and Urvashi Dholakia in those roles. From October 29, 2001, till February 28, 2008, the show was shown. Disney+ Hotstar now has the entire series available for digital streaming. The drama focused on the tragic romance between Anurag and Prerna. Their family history, including the lives of their children and grandkids at various ages.

Kasautii was dubbed in the native languages of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius and aired there. Kapoor said that Anurag was called after her director friend and Prerna was named after her father’s friend Prem Chopra’s daughter. The series premiered in February 2005 at 11.3 TVR on Maharaja TV and peaked in April 2005 at 8 TVR, making it one of the most-watched programs in Sri Lanka.
