Krishna Vamsi was born in the Andhra Pradesh town of Tadepalligudem, West Godavari, the son of the engineer Ramachandra Rao. The director later pursued a Masters in Agricultural Political Economy at Agra University after earning his Bachelor of Science in science. After completing his education, the director began his career in the movie business by assisting Ram Gopal Varma, and in 1995, he released his directorial debut with Gulabi.

Before briefly working with Ram Gopal Varma, Krishna Vamshi began his career with Tripuraneni Varaprasad, also known as Chitti. Chandamama was directed by Vamsi in 2007. Sasirekha Parinayam, his next endeavor, was released in 2009, and Mahatma, Srikanth’s 100th movie, was released the following year.

He was the director of Ninne Pelladata, one of the top-grossing Telugu movies of 1996. After that, he was the director of the critically acclaimed crime movie Sindhooram, which was produced by his production company Andhra Talkies. Both films were nominated for the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. With Shakti: The Power, a 2002 Bollywood adaptation of his own 1998 Telugu cult classic Antahpuram, he made his Bollywood debut.
