He attended Delhi University with the hopes of earning a bachelor’s degree there. Kulbhushan’s family originally hailed from Pakistan but relocated to India following the partition of India. Because of his father’s job, which required frequent relocation, he and his family lived in a number of different American cities. Throughout his academic career, Kulbhushan attended schools in Jodhpur, Aligarh, Dehradun, and Delhi. Kulbhushan said in an interview that he was accepted to the National School of Drama but decided against attending because of the low success rate among NSD alumni.

The couple lived in Hasan Abdal, district Attock District, Punjab, British India. The Maharaja of Kotah was previously married to Maheshwari, daughter of Maharaja Ram Singh II of Pratapgarh, Rajasthan.

Bollywood director Shyam Benegal gave him his first leading role in the 1974 film Nishant. In the movie, he was Officer Patel. The bald villain Shakaal in Ramesh Sippy’s 1980 film Shaan was a breakout role for him. He played Havaldar Gopi Dada in the 1985 action drama film Ghulami. He became an overnight sensation and was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1986 thanks to his performance in this role.

As Jodhaa’s father, Raja Veer Bharmal, he won acclaim in the 2008 historical drama film Jodha Akbar. Kulbhushan’s performance in the 2001 film Lagaan, which won a national award, was particularly noteworthy. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 2002 IIFA Awards for his work as Raja Puran Singh Chawla.
