He attended Delhi University with the hopes of earning a bachelor’s degree there. Kulbhushan’s family originally hailed from Pakistan but relocated to India following the partition of India. The Maharaja of Kotah was previously married to Maheshwari, daughter of Maharaja Ram Singh II of Pratapgarh, Rajasthan.

Bollywood director Shyam Benegal gave him his first leading role in the 1974 film Nishant. In the movie, he was Officer Patel. The bald villain Shakaal in Ramesh Sippy’s 1980 film Shaan was a breakout role for him. He played Havaldar Gopi Dada in the 1985 action drama film Ghulami. He became an overnight sensation and was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1986 thanks to his performance in this role.

As Jodhaa’s father, Raja Veer Bharmal, he won acclaim in the 2008 historical drama film Jodha Akbar.
